The tithi of Mahashivratri begins on 18th February 2023, at 8:02 pm and ends on February 19th, 2023 at 4:18 pm. According to the Hindu Calendar, Mahashivratri is observed a day before the new moon. Devotees visit Jyotirlinga to offer prayers to Lord Shiva and to seek his divine grace.
There are several legends associated with the festival of Mahashivratri. One of the popular legends associated with Mahashivratri is that it is that day when Lord Shiva swallowed the poison to protect the universe from destruction during Samundra Manthan (churning of the ocean of milk) which gave his throat the blue colour and he was referred as ‘Neelkantha Mahadev’.
