Maha Shivratri
Maha Shivratri is a festival dedicated to Lord Shiva. As per the Hindu Calendar, it is celebrated in the month of Phalguna (February/March). This Year, 8th March will be celebrated as Mahashivratri. According to ancient Hindu scriptures, Mahashivaratri is the divine union of Shiva and Shakti.
This auspicious night is believed to eliminate ignorance and darkness in life. The origin of Maha Shivratri is mentioned in several ancient Hindu scriptures like Shiva Purana and Skanda Purana. Lord Shiva’s divine dance ‘Tandava’ is also associated with the night of Maha Shivratri.
The devotees of Lord Shiva visit Shiva temples and recite Shiva Panchakshari mantra ‘Om Namah Shivaya’, Shiva tandava stotram, and Mahamrityunjaya mantra to seek the blessings of Lord Shiva. Several devotees observe fast and perform puja and rituals to please Lord Shiva. It is believed that Lord Shiva can be pleased solely by offering bel patra and water on the holy Shiva Linga.

The tithi of Mahashivratri begins on 18th February 2023, at 8:02 pm and ends on February 19th, 2023 at 4:18 pm. According to the Hindu Calendar, Mahashivratri is observed a day before the new moon. Devotees visit Jyotirlinga to offer prayers to Lord Shiva and to seek his divine grace.
There are several legends associated with the festival of Mahashivratri. One of the popular legends associated with Mahashivratri is that it is that day when Lord Shiva swallowed the poison to protect the universe from destruction during Samundra Manthan (churning of the ocean of milk) which gave his throat the blue colour and he was referred as ‘Neelkantha Mahadev’.

The sacred night of Mahashivratri holds great significance for sadhus and spiritual gurus. On this day, people practice sadhana before sunrise and sunset. It is believed that fasting on the day of Mahashivratri brings peace and purifies the soul.
