Best Tank Classes in WoW Classic Season of Discovery

Warrior

Veteran WoW players will have seen this one coming a mile away. In the early days of WoW, no serious group or raid was complete without a warrior. Warriors were the de facto tanks in WoW Classic, and it looks like not much has changed in Season of Discovery. The runes only make them stronger.

Druid

Guardian Druids are the Tanking spec for the class, and true to its jack-of-all-trades nature, it's not quite the best Tank in WoW SoD. Tank Druids can have a hard time maintaining threat on enemies, especially with many of their most useful abilities locked behind later Phase level gates.

Right now, Guardian Druids need at least a few seconds to establish a baseline Threat with groups of enemies, and even then can have a hard time managing Threat once the rest of the party starts dealing damage. In later Phases, Guardian Druids will likely be in a much better spot, but in Phase One the class just isn't as good as some of the best SoD Tanks – even with hotfixed Rune buffs.

Shaman

Shaman tanks are another exciting new addition to the tanking roster in Season of Discovery. This has been something that players have asked for, and Shaman tanks have really delivered on the fantasy and strength that they bring. Shamans have the best AoE burst and snap threat of any tank, making them the absolute best choice for large trash pulls. Their ability to consistently generate mana during AoE fights thanks to a large number of blocks solves their mana issues as well, allowing them to spam abilities freely. However, Shaman's main downside is damage and mana on single target encounter. They don't have quite the resource freedom and damage ceiling that Warriors have, which is what keeps them in the A-tier for now. Shamans also can bring some important raid buffs, making them valuable to any group.

Paladin

Now that they finally have a Taunt in Hand of Reckoning, Paladins can officially say that they are real tanks! Comparing Paladin Tanks to Warriors in Shaman however is a little different, Paladins don't take the Rebuke interrupt rune when tanking, very good in AOE threat but not as good as Shaman's Molten Blast, doesn't do nearly as much single target damage as a Warrior Tank, and you basically have to choose your talents as going heavy into damage but losing mitigation, or more mitigation and less damage.

Some Paladin Tanks have opted for going for a two-handed weapon route to increase their damage, but doing so impacts their mitigation even more. Paladin Tank is the perfect example of a Tank that can't do both really well and has to choose one when it comes to damage or mitigation.

Rogue

Rogues may reach extreme avoidance levels later on, but starting out have low effective health for the role. Their potential comes with significant gear investment and support. While runes offer some mitigation, Rogues simply don't have the innate durability to withstand boss hits like other tanks can. Survival relies entirely on avoidance procs which aren't reliable enough for the job.
